Classroom Grants

Mrs. Salomon's science students at Bluffs Middle School are expanding their hands-on learning with supplemental STEM curriculum provided by a Classroom Grant from the SBPS Foundation.  Mrs. Salomon noticed the need for further materials and supplies during the 2018/19 school year.  Her students were moving and learning quickly and she wanted to do more to challenge and educate them.  "I appreciate all the Foundation has done for me and my classes.  Thanks to the SBPS Foundation, I have been able to provide a variety of opportunities of 7th Grade Science Enrichment," Salomon says of the grant money.  With the grant, her classes have been able to "design and construct prototype solar cars and hydro power stations.  Students were able to test their designs, make modifications and improvements to their design, allowing us to meet 3D state standards.  Also included were water turbines, geothermal energy with exothermic reactions, and wind turbines to grasp and study the challenges we face with energy.  It should be an exciting year for 7th grade students!  The Foundation is making a true positive impact."

Students agree; the class has been fun and provided a new outlook on engineering and science.

  • I learned a lot more about engineering from the science enrichment.  I think that it was a really good idea for Mrs. Salomon to get the grant money from the Foundation.  This class is a way to help young students learn to use technology.  It helps students to solve world wide problems.  Peyton May

  • I am enjoying the enrichment class, it improved my knowledge about different studies.  I learn better with a hands on approach and it has really sparked a passion for creating things.  It is probably one of my favorite classes this year.  It is also very fun.  Nolan Lambertson
